Kerrison Sharpness and the Benefits of Single-Use Instruments
Kerrisons are one of the most difficult pieces of surgical equipment to clean and sterilize with 100% certainty, and have been identified as the “instrument most likely to cause bioburden/debris events.” In addition to sterilization and the prevention of cross-contamination, published research—as well as the personal experiences of virtually every surgeon—reveal how important it is to use a sharp kerrison rongeur. American Spine Registry Shows Infection is Leading Post-Surgical Complication
The American Spine Registry, a joint project between the AAOS and AANS, has issued its First Edition Annual Report providing comprehensive data on spine surgeries from 2015 to 2023. The Report shows that surgical site infections are by far the most common surgical complication at 64.8% of all lumbar fusion complications and 59.1% of all cervical fusion complications.

Single-Use, Sterile, Pre-Packaged (SSP) surgical implants and instruments have the potential to significantly reduce Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) and improve patient throughput, providing both superior patient outcomes and substantial cost-savings. Furthermore—and contrary to common assumptions—literature addressing the use of SSP instruments demonstrates that they have a lower overall lifecycle environmental impact than reusable instruments.
