Importance of Debridement
Debridement is a fundamental principle of wound care and essential for optimal healing rates. There are many factors that affect the overall success rate of wound healing/wound closure, including: inconsistent techniques among various providers, poor wound bed prep, extended numbing time and procedure time, use of skin substitute(s), complications (e.g. bleeding), inadequate removal of devitalized tissue, and inadequate removal of bacteria/biofilm. New technologies offer more options for providers when performing a wound debridement; however, these systems can be costly and require capital equipment purchases. Traditional scalpels and curettes also have their drawbacks, with the potential for increased patient pain/anxiety, and risk of deep cuts, which can cause excess bleeding, or in some cases, even damage underlying tissues/nerves.
XSONX® addresses the drawbacks of scalpels and curettes without the capital equipment requirements and high cost of other new technologies, while offering the potential for a more consistent wound debridement, faster overall procedure time (e.g., preparation, set-up, wound debridement, post-debridement, clean-up, etc.), ability to treat more patients both in the clinic and OR with improved efficiency and reduced cost to the Federal Government.
