Single-Use Sterile Medical Devices

Spartan Medical has expanded its single-use, sterile portfolio of surgical convenience kits to address orthopedic and trauma procedures at Military Treatment Facilities in the United States, OUS, and forward operations, as well as VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) and Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). Providing single-use, sterile instruments, implants, and medical devices in pre-packaged, off-the-shelf (OTS) kits, eliminates the need to re-sterilize instruments, improves operating room (OR) efficiencies/workflow, and reduces the potential for Surgical Site Infections (SSIs). NOTE: The majority of SSIs result from contaminated surgical instruments and implantsi

MelziTM Sharps Finder

The MelziTM Sharps Finder (MSF) is a single-use sterile device designed to help surgeons locate instruments, needles, instrument fragments, or sharps lost inside a patient during surgery. When a needle miscount occurs or uncountable items are lost in vivo, the MelziTM Sharps Finder can supplement current protocols with advanced detection to prevent retained surgical item (RSI) events, save OR time, and enable the continuous flow of the surgery in open and minimally invasive cases.

Note: The MSF detects ferrous metals (primarily composed of iron) with magnetic properties including blades, surgical needles, instruments, and guidewires, and would NOT be interfered with by titanium clips, staples, nitinol, or plastic.

Key Features and Benefits of the MelziTM Sharps Finder:

  • Two sizes available, each with adjustment dials for sensitivity, rotation, and deflection
    • Short-shaft (22cm) ergonomically designed for open surgery
    • Long-shaft (45cm) designed to work in a 5mm trocar for minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic procedures
  • Increases patient safetyiii
    • Minimizes potential RSI events
    • Prevents prolonged anesthesia time
    • Decreases patient and staff X-ray exposure
  • Reduces the need for additional personnel to enter the OR (radiologist or additional staff)
  • Saves OR time
    • Staff spends 30 minutes on average managing lost sharps
    • Using X-ray can add 40 additional minutes
  • 12x more effective at locating a lost sharp than a manual searchi
  • 2-year shelf life with a battery life of 45 minutes
  • FDA Registration: Class II 3017424875

SmartShot® Marrow Access Device

SmartShot® Marrow Access Device is a single-use, sterile marrow access device for stimulating marrow in the treatment of small (<1.5cm), localized articular cartilage defects of the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, wrist, or elbow. Bone marrow stimulation (BMS) is increasingly recognized as the gold standard for treatment as bone marrow is rich in stem cells which are shown to aid in cartilage regeneration. SmartShot® enables cartilage regeneration using an innovative approach that improves healing over traditional legacy techniques (microfracture and drilling). With the simple pull of the trigger, the spring is activated, and a 1mm needle penetrates bone 8mm deep – providing consistent, minimally invasive treatment with an easy-to-use device.

  • Provides a reliable, minimally invasive solution to treat small cartilage lesions that are often encountered unexpectedly in arthroscopic knee, ankle, and shoulder procedures without procedural disruption
  • Less bone compaction and more consistent bone healing and remodelingiv
  • Eliminates surface sheering and skiving (when the subchondral plate is disrupted and the overlying cartilage physically displaced)
  • Sterile, single-use device eliminates sterile-processing burden and minimizes infection risk
  • Spring actuation allows for consistent, reliable insertion force with each shot
  • Single-hand use provides better control and more flexibility to accommodate different user techniques
